Visitor centre

The main Visitor Centre of the Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Komiža, within the Ivan Vitić Cultural Centre, an architecturally significant building that represents one of the most important works of the distinguished Croatian architect and a representative of post-war modern architecture.

The centre serves as the main information and interpretation point of the geopark and is intended for visitors, the local community, educational institutions, and professionals. Its primary role is to provide visitors with orientation within the geopark area and to introduce them to the geological, natural, and cultural characteristics of the Vis Archipelago through lectures, workshops, interpretative programmes, and presentations.

The centre includes a lecture and presentation hall, a workshop space, a geological collection, a specialised geological literature collection, a souvenir shop, and office space for the geopark staff. Visitors have access to informational and promotional materials, publications, souvenirs, and guidance for planning visits to geotrails, sites, and other attractions throughout the archipelago.

The Visitor Centre was also presented at the international exhibition “Deep Surfaces. Architecture to Enhance the Visitor Experience of UNESCO Sites”, organised by UNESCO in partnership with the Royal Commission for AlUla as part of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, as an example of architectural and interpretative approaches within UNESCO sites.

The building that houses the Visitor Centre was renovated in 2013 as part of the initiative “A Thousand Pixels for Vitić”, launched by the Association of Croatian Architects, highlighting its architectural and cultural value as part of the contemporary heritage of the island of Vis.

Network of Visitor and Interpretation Points

In addition to the main Visitor Centre in Komiža, the geopark area includes several other thematic visitor and interpretation locations that complement the interpretative network of the geopark. These locations allow visitors to explore different aspects of the geological, natural, and cultural heritage of the Vis Archipelago across various parts of the territory.

Blue Cave Visitor Centre – Biševo

The Blue Cave Visitor Centre – Biševo is located on the island of Biševo and focuses on the interpretation of the island’s natural phenomena, with particular emphasis on the Blue Cave, one of the most recognisable geomorphological sites of the archipelago.

The centre provides visitors with information about the geological characteristics of the island, the diversity of terrestrial and marine habitats, and the historical use of the landscape, while also offering guidance for planning and understanding visits to sites on the island of Biševo.
