Vis Archipelago Geopark in the GeoCro Application

GeoCro is a mobile application developed by the Croatian Geological Survey (HGI) that provides a simple and accessible way to explore the geology of Croatia. It is intended for anyone interested in learning more about rocks, geological structures, fossils and the geological history of Croatia, regardless of their previous knowledge of geology.

The application is based on an interactive geological map of the Republic of Croatia at a scale of 1:300,000, developed from the map and accompanying explanatory notes published by the Croatian Geological Survey. The scientific content has been adapted for use in a mobile application so that information about Croatia’s geological structure is understandable and accessible to a wider audience.

In addition to geological units, the application highlights numerous interesting locations where users can discover rare, characteristic or particularly significant geological features. These locations are divided into three main categories – fossils, rocks and geo-attractions – while basic geological terms and the geological evolution of Croatia through different geological periods are also explained in a simplified and accessible way.

Geotrails of Vis and Biševo in the GeoCro Application

Vis Archipelago Geopark is the first geopark to have prepared and published in the GeoCro application all described geological points along three marked geotrails on the islands of Vis and Biševo.

This provides visitors and local residents with direct access, while in the field, to information about the geological features of our area. The application presents the main characteristics of the rocks and geological phenomena that shape different parts of the Vis Archipelago in an engaging and easy-to-understand manner, accompanied by photographs and illustrations that further explain their significance and formation.

By using the application while exploring the geotrails, visitors can connect the features visible in the landscape with the geological processes that have shaped Vis, Biševo and the surrounding islands over millions of years.

GeoCro is a free mobile application that can be downloaded and used on mobile devices, making geological heritage more accessible to visitors, students, local communities and everyone interested in discovering natural heritage.

The identification and preparation of the geological points of Vis Archipelago Geopark within the GeoCro application were carried out in cooperation with the Croatian Geological Survey, as part of the GEOtrails project, co-financed by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund.
