KRAS – Karst Resources: Analysis and System
Ministry of Regional Development and European Union Funds
Project title: KRAS – Karst Resources: Analysis and System
Project lead: Vis Archipelago Geopark
Project partners: Antun Matijašević Karamaneo High School, Our Children Society Mali Lošinj, and Imotski Lakes Geopark
Brief description: The "KRAS – Karst Resources: Analysis and System" project focuses on investigating the impacts of climate change, seasonal variations, and human activities on the water quality of karst aquifers, with particular emphasis on sensitive island water resources.
The project is being implemented on the islands of Vis, Biševo, Lošinj, and Cres, as well as in the Imotski region, bringing together high school students, teachers, hydrogeology experts, and organisations dedicated to the protection of natural heritage.
Through collaboration with the Croatian Geological Survey, students will gain practical knowledge of hydrogeological research methods, water sampling and quality analysis, and the processing and interpretation of collected data.
Project activities include the procurement of laboratory equipment for water analysis, training for students and teachers, field workshops and study visits, six rounds of monthly water sampling and analysis at selected sampling sites, the creation of a digital database, the comparison of research results from different karst water systems, and the public presentation of results at a final mini-conference on the island of Vis.
The project contributes to a better understanding of the sensitivity of karst aquifers to natural and anthropogenic influences, strengthens scientific literacy among young people, and connects island and mainland communities through joint research and educational activities.
Project goals and expected results:
General goal: To increase scientific literacy and environmental awareness among young people regarding the importance of preserving and sustainably managing karst aquifers, particularly those on islands, through practical scientific research and collaboration with experts.
Specific goals:
- To investigate the sensitivity of karst aquifers to climate change, seasonal variations, and human impacts through systematic water quality monitoring.
- To compare the hydrogeological characteristics of different karst water systems on islands and the mainland.
- To train students in conducting scientific research, as well as collecting, analysing, and interpreting data.
- To strengthen educational capacities and interregional cooperation between schools, geoparks, and scientific institutions.
- To raise awareness within local communities about the importance of preserving water resources and the sustainability of island water supply.
Expected results: Completed training for students and teachers, collected and analysed water quality data at selected sites, an established digital database of research results, compared hydrogeological characteristics of different karst areas, and publicly presented findings. The acquired equipment and knowledge will enable continued water quality monitoring even after the project concludes.
