Celebrating 140 Years of Tourism at the Blue Cave on the Island of Biševo
Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board
Project Lead: Vis Archipelago Geopark
Partners: Komiža Tourist Board, City of Komiža
Project description and objectives: Tourism in Dalmatia began in 1884, when the Viennese painter Baron Eugen Ransonnet introduced the Blue Cave to the world. The year 2024 marks the 140th anniversary of the discovery of this geomorphological natural monument, which remains one of the most significant attractions in Split-Dalmatia County. The celebration program includes a rowing regatta from the town of Komiža to Mezoport on the island of Biševo, an organized visit to the Blue Cave, and a roundtable discussion featuring guests and speakers from Croatia and abroad. The project also includes a collaboration with Split-Dalmatia County to host an underwater photography exhibition at Cape Gatula. These activities serve as a prelude to the Rota Palagruzona, a regatta held annually since 2010 that commemorates the oldest regatta in the world, which, according to records from 1593, once featured 73 vessels.
