Anniversary of the UNESCO Global Geopark Vis Archipelago

On April 17, 2019 The Vis Archipelago became part of the global network of UNESCO Global Geoparks, thereby internationally confirming the exceptional value of its geological, natural, and cultural heritage. Today, we proudly mark the anniversary of this important recognition and the shared journey we have been building for six years.

The UNESCO Global Geopark Vis Archipelago encompasses the area of the islands of Vis, Biševo, Svetac, Brusnik, Jabuka, and the surrounding waters – a region of unique geological history, exceptional biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage. This area bears witness to millions of years of geological processes, from the volcanic origin of the offshore islands to the complex tectonic and sedimentation processes that shaped the archipelago's current appearance.

However, a geopark is not just an area of valuable geoheritage. It represents a model of sustainable development that connects nature protection, science, education, the local community, and sustainable tourism. Through interpretive programs, educational activities, scientific research, and cooperation with the local population, the geopark strives to preserve the area while also creating new opportunities for community development.

The Vis Archipelago is often described as “one of the last paradisiacal oases of the Mediterranean”, and this very uniqueness carries great responsibility. The UNESCO designation is not just a recognition, but also an obligation to preserve, understand, and pass on the entrusted area to future generations.

A geopark connects rocks and sea, landscape and people, past and future. It unites geoheritage, the local community, tradition, knowledge, and sustainable development into the unique story of our archipelago.

We are proud that the Vis Archipelago is part of the global UNESCO Global Geoparks network and that, together with the local community, partners, researchers, and visitors, we continue to build an area where heritage is not only protected but also lived.
