Field research in Komiža: HORECA sector involved in reducing single-use plastics

The Vis Archipelago Geopark and the Sunce Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development are conducting field research on the use of single-use plastics in local hospitality and accommodation businesses in the Komiža area.

The research is being carried out as part of the LooP Zoneproject, co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED program, in which Komiža serves as one of the pilot areas for developing and testing locally tailored solutions to reduce single-use plastics.

Over the past few weeks, the project team has been visiting restaurants, taverns, cafes, bars, fast-food outlets, hotels, apartments, and other representatives of the HORECA sector. Through interviews and surveys, they are gathering data on the types and quantities of single-use plastic products used in daily operations, existing waste reduction practices, the availability of alternative products, and the obstacles businesses face when implementing more sustainable solutions.

The response so far shows significant interest from the local business sector in this topic. Many establishments are already implementing certain measures, such as using reusable products, purchasing in bulk, reducing individually packaged items, and working with suppliers who offer returnable or reusable packaging. At the same time, the most common challenges identified include the availability of suitable suppliers on the island, the cost of alternative solutions, logistics, hygiene requirements, and consumer habits.

The collected data will be used to create an overview of the current situation and to select pilot activities tailored to the actual needs of Komiža. The goal is not to impose a single solution on all establishments, but rather to work with local stakeholders to develop measures that are feasible in an island and highly seasonal environment.

Special attention will be paid to solutions that can reduce the use of single-use food and beverage packaging, individual portions, plastic products in accommodation facilities, and products used during events and in maritime operations.
