Vis Archipelago groundwater conservation project completed
The project has been successfully completed „Research, protection and sustainable use of fresh groundwater of the Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark“, focused on the research, protection, and sustainable use of groundwater in the Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark.
The main goal of the project was to identify potential sources of drinking water on Biševo Island through hydrogeological research, thereby contributing to the long-term security of water supply and improving the quality of life for the local population.
The project results are particularly important because Biševo does not have its own source of drinking water nor is it connected to the mainland water supply, which means water is delivered to the island by ships several times a year. The conducted research confirmed the existence of a sustainable karst aquifer, thus laying the groundwork for the rational use of this valuable natural resource.
In addition to the scientific research component, the project also had an important educational aspect. During its implementation, workshops, field research, and educational activities were held for children and the local population, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation, especially on islands where water resources are limited and extremely sensitive.
The project was funded through a partnership UNESCO and abrdn Charitable Foundation, and its results represent an important contribution to the preservation of natural heritage, sustainable development, and strengthening the resilience of the local community of the Vis Archipelago.
