The Komiža Fishing Cooperative is an important local entity in an area considered among the oldest and most recognizable traditional fishing towns on the Adriatic. For centuries, Komiža has lived with and from the sea, and fishing has shaped its daily life, language, customs, economy, shipbuilding, diet, and identity. In such an environment, the Komiža Fishing Cooperative continues to operate as a hub connecting fishermen, catches, markets, and the local community.

The cooperative has been operating since 2000, and its role is particularly important as it brings together fishermen and supports the placement of fishery products from the Komiža and Vis areas. In island conditions, where distance from the mainland, seasonality, transport costs, and market changes pose constant challenges, the cooperative plays a vital role in preserving the continuity of local fisheries and strengthening the position of small-scale fishermen. According to available sources, it is a cooperative that connects fishermen to facilitate the delivery of their catches to consumers in Croatia and abroad.

A special place in the cooperative's modern operations is held by the project "Komiža Swordfish", selected through FLAG Škoji. The project focuses on adding value to the cooperative members' most important catch – swordfish – as well as mitigating climate change and achieving greater energy efficiency. As part of the project, the Komiža Fishing Cooperative invested in modernization and more sustainable operations, including the installation of a solar power plant at the cooperative's facility. This connects traditional fishing activities with modern needs for energy efficiency and adapting operations to new environmental challenges.

An important part of the project also relates to branding Komiža swordfish through the GEOfood label, an international brand developed in UNESCO Global Geoparks. The Vis Archipelago Geoparkalso participated in this process, further emphasizing the link between local fishing traditions, sustainable food production, and the value of the UNESCO Global Geopark area. Swordfish is thus presented not merely as a fishery product, but also as part of a broader story about Komiža, the sea, local knowledge, fishing heritage, and a modern approach to valuing island products.
Through its activities, the Komiža Fishing Cooperative preserves an important part of Komiža's living identity. Its value lies not only in its economic role but also in maintaining the connection between fishermen, the sea, and the community.
