Project title: GEOfish
Project Leader: Vis Archipelago Geopark
Short description:
The GEOfish project aims to enhance the value of one of the oldest and most important resources of the Vis Archipelago. Fish, both as a raw material and as a final product, will be further promoted through the GEOfood brand.
GEOfood is an international brand of UNESCO Global Geoparks based on linking food with geological heritage. It is implemented by 29 UNESCO Global Geoparks across five continents. The GEOfood brand highlights the importance and origin of raw materials, products and/or dishes served in restaurants and establishes their connection with geological heritage.
Following research into fish species, habitats and related topics, as well as a three-day educational and informative event and a round-table discussion, the island of Vis will further enrich its gastronomic offer with dishes based on fish and fish products.
The project also includes a culinary workshop for students of the hospitality and catering secondary school on Vis, giving them an opportunity to learn how to prepare fish specialities from renowned culinary experts.
Through its activities, the project will contribute to the effective management of fisheries resources and the protection of natural (geological) heritage.
Project objective and expected result:
The GEOfish project will strengthen the connection between the fisheries and tourism sectors by enhancing the value of fish as a resource of key importance to fisheries in the Vis Archipelago, while also contributing to the preservation of local traditions and the continued sustainable management of fisheries resources.
Total project value: HRK 294,349.42.
Grant funding is provided from the State Budget of the Republic of Croatia (15% – HRK 43,404.76) and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (85% – HRK 245,960.29).
