Second research mission to Mala Palagruža

From September 19 to 22, 2026, researchers from the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, participated in their second research mission to Mala Palagruža, in collaboration with the Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark.

During the multi-day field study, the most significant geological and geomorphological features of Mala Palagruža were recorded, both underwater and from the air. Special attention was given to documenting the geological structure and the various coastal formations that make this small but exceptionally valuable islet one of the most intriguing geological sites within the Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark.

This year's research is a continuation of the first field campaign conducted in July 2024, which marked the beginning of detailed geological studies of Mala Palagruža in partnership between the Vis Archipelago Geopark and the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. The research was initiated to gather the expert data required to propose the islet as a protected geological monument of nature.

Mala Palagruža is the second-largest islet in the Palagruža archipelago and a geological site of international importance. Its uniqueness is linked to the distinct geological structure of the Palagruža diapiric complex, as well as the great diversity of geomorphological forms created by the interplay of geological composition, tectonics, and intense marine processes.

Continuing these field studies allows for the collection of additional data that will contribute to a better understanding of the geological development and geomorphological processes of Mala Palagruža, as well as the documentation of its geoheritage.

The eight-member team successfully completed another demanding research mission, despite rough seas in both directions, and were rewarded at the end with impressive views of Italy and the nearest Croatian islands.
