International Noise Awareness Day: The sea is not just a route – it's a habitat

On the occasion of International Noise Awareness Day we are reminded that noise doesn't stop at the sea's surface. The sound of engines, planing, vessels lingering near sensitive areas, and intense maritime traffic are heard even underwater – in an environment that is home to numerous species and sensitive habitats.

The Vis Archipelago is an area of exceptional natural value. Its underwater area is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000, and among the most sensitive habitats are sea caves, reefs, Posidonia meadows, and the waters important for bottlenose dolphins.

The project ASPeH – Adriatic SPEcies and Habitats of coastal areasis also dedicated to preserving valuable marine habitats, in which the Vis Archipelago Geopark participates as an associated partner. As part of the project, a Conservation Plan for Natura 2000 habitat type 8330 – submerged or partially submerged sea caves was developed for the Vis Archipelago area, serving as an important document for better understanding, conservation, and responsible management of the sea caves in our region.

The Plan covers the sea caves of the Vis Archipelago, including the areas of Vis, Biševo, Ravnik, Brusnik, Svetac, Palagruža, and Galijula, and emphasizes the need to reconcile visitation, tourism, and nature protection.

Therefore, responsible behavior at sea is an important part of nature conservation. Reducing speed, respecting distance from the coast and caves, not anchoring in sensitive habitats, not entering areas with vessels where it's not permitted, and, whenever possible, turning off the engine and listening to the sea – these are small decisions that make a big difference.

The sea is not just a route.
The sea is a habitat.
