St. Florian – Acknowledging Firefighters and a Reminder of the Importance of Fire Protection

On the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, we remember the importance of all those who, through their work, courage, and readiness, protect people, settlements, nature, and the landscape of our archipelago.

This day is also an opportunity to remember the large fire that struck Biševo in 2003, leaving a deep mark on its landscape. The fire affected more than three-quarters of the island, with only the far northern part of Biševo remaining untouched by the flames. The formerly forested areas gradually changed after the fire, and today's vegetation cover is largely the result of natural regeneration and succession following the blaze.

On islands, a fire is never just an immediate danger. It permanently alters the soil, vegetation, habitats, landscape, and the life of the local community. Due to summer droughts, high temperatures, wind, inaccessible terrain, and distance from the mainland, every spark can very quickly turn into a serious threat to people, nature, and the environment we protect.

That's why fire protection is an important part of preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Vis archipelago. Dry stone walls, old paths, agricultural areas, forested regions, island settlements, and valuable habitats form a landscape that has been shaped over centuries in coexistence between humans and nature. Its preservation also depends on our responsibility in daily behavior.

As the summer months approach, it's especially important to remember not to light fires outdoors, not to discard cigarette butts, not to leave glass or flammable objects in nature, to respect prohibitions, and to report any suspected fire promptly.

We thank all firefighters, especially local volunteer fire departments and residents who have, over the years, participated in defending Vis, Komiža, Biševo, and the entire archipelago from fires.

Protecting the island also means preventing fires.

Thank you to everyone who protects the island when it's most difficult.
